Adapting Care to Meet Changing Needs
Robin has been a valued member of our care home for many years. Over time, as he has aged, his mobility has declined, creating new challenges in his daily life. However, Robin’s desire was to remain in his home, surrounded by familiar faces, housemates and his established routines. To support this, we adapted our service and environment to meet his evolving needs, ensuring his comfort, safety, and independence.
Addressing Mobility Challenges
Initially, Robin lived in an upstairs room, but as his mobility declined, navigating the stairs became a risk. To ensure his safety while allowing him to continue living in his home, an extension was built at Greenway Park to provide a ground-floor bedroom with an attached wet room.
Robin was actively involved in designing the extension, choosing the colours and decor to reflect his passion for his favourite football team, Arsenal United. This personalisation helped him feel comfortable and connected to the space, making the transition smoother and more enjoyable.
Continued Adaptations for Independence
As the years passed, Robin’s mobility declined further. To maintain his independence and accessibility, additional modifications were made to his living space. A wheelchair ramp was installed, leading from an external door directly into his bedroom, ensuring ease of movement in and out of the home.
To further support his active participation in the community, a wheelchair-accessible vehicle was purchased. This allowed Robin to continue engaging in activities and stay connected with the people and places that matter most to him.
Ongoing Support for Quality of Life
Despite his mobility challenges, Robin remains committed to staying as active as possible. He continues to walk where he can, using mobility aids to support his movement and maintain his physical health. These adaptations have enabled Robin to maintain a high quality of life while ensuring his comfort and safety as his needs evolve.
Outcome and Impact
Robin’s story is a testament to the importance of responsive, person-centred care. By continuously adapting to his changing needs, we have enabled him to remain in the home he loves while preserving his independence and dignity. Through thoughtful modifications and unwavering support, Robin continues to live a fulfilling and engaged life, demonstrating that aging and mobility challenges do not have to limit one’s ability to thrive.
